Beijing Prince Gong's Mansion Map
Prince Gong's Mansion is a vivid example of the grand residence of ancient Chinese officers, suited in a charming Hutong District. It was originally construncted in 1777 by Heshun ( an officer of emperor Qianlong's favourite) for his residence during the reign of Qianlong emperor of the Qing Dynasty. Because of accusations of corruption, He Shen was executed and the mansion was confiscated in 1799. Later it was assigned to Prince Gong by Emperor Jiaqing. It is Prince Gong's name that is currently given to the compound.
This grand Mansion, covering an area of 60,000 square metres, in some sense portrayed the kind of mansion desecribed in the great novel Dream of the Red Mansion written by Caoxueqin. This Mansion is important not only for its aesthetic value but as an asset to those who wish to study the lifestyle of the privileged classes in the feudal society. In 1982 it has been declared as one of the Chinese National Cultural Heritages in Beijing. And since November 1996 it becomes a new publicly open scenic spot for tourists.
