Beijing Zoo Maps
Beijing Zoo, situated in Xicheng District, to the west of Beijing Exhibition Center, was known for a short time after the founding of the People's Republic as the Western Suburbs Park (Xijiao Gongyuan). The grounds combine cultivated flower gardens with stretches of natural scenery, including dense groves of trees, stretches of grassland, a small stream, lotus pools and small hills dotted with pavilions and halls.
It was initially named Ten Thousand Animal Garden when it was built in 1908, proving that it already has had a history of more than 90 years. Now it has develped into a large zoo boasting many rare animals from all around the world, such as White Bear from the North Pole, Kangaroo from Australia, Zebra from Africa. Moreover, heads of states gave some of the animals.
At present, Beijing Zoo houses over 7,000 creatures of 600 different species, including the giant panda, peacock, red-crowned crane and Pere David's deer as well as the African giraffe, rhinoceros, chimpanzee and antelope; American continent; wild ox from Europe; and elephant and gibbon from India. Besides,it boasts the world's largest inland aquarium in the world, about 42 thousand square meters. Tourists can also enjoy shows performed by the dolphins, sea lions and whales in the Aquarium's Ocean Theater.
