Norbulingka, literally”Jewel Garden,” situated in the west side of Lhasa at the bank of the Kyichu River about one km southwest of Potala Palace, was the summer palace for the Dalai Lamas. It has an area of about 360,000 square meters with 374 rooms inside is regarded as the biggest man-made garden in Tibet Autonomous Region.

Norbulingka was built in the 40’s of the 18the century. It was a resort for the Seventh Dalai Lama for bathing in fountain. Later it was used as the Summer Palace for successive Lamas, where they solved the political problems and held festive celebrations. After a series of expansions and renovations, the appearance was improved with pavilions, gardens and woods. It has now been turned into a park open to the public.

Admission: 60 RMB/person
Recommended time of visit: Three hours
