After the demise of the Tang Dynasty, China came to an age of political upheaval and national disunity again. There were five dynasties emerged one after another in the north, namely Later Liang, Later Tang, Later Jin, Later Han, and Later Zhou. Meanwhile, ten kingdoms established mainly in the south, which were originated from the former Jiedushi (regional military attachment) of Tang. They were Southern Wu, Wu Yue, Former Shu, Min, Southern Han, Southern Ping, Southern Chu, Later Shu, Southern Tang, and Northern Han. The period of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms started from 902 AD and ended in 979 AD.
