The Zhou Dynasty (also spelled Chou, 1045 BC – 221 BC) conquered and succeeded the Shang Dynasty and was followed by the Qin Dynasty in China. It is the dynasty that reigned for the longest period of all Chinese dynasties and it is broken into two period – the Western Zhou Dynasty (1045 BC – 771 BC) and the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (770 BC – 256 BC). The Eastern Zhou Dynasty is divided into the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC – 476 BC) and the Warring States Period (475 BC – 221 BC).
