As China is such a populous country, traffic jam can be seen in every city. Subway is the best transportation tool to ease the traffice strain. At the same time, it is environment friendly and energy-saving.
Before 2000, there was only 5 cities in China which had its own metro system: Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Hong Kong. Beijing operated China's first subway on October of 1969. Tianjin, Shanghai and Guangzhou had their own subway seperately on 1984, 1995 and 1999. Hongkong is famous for its successful subway operation pattern which help Hongkong get billions HKD each year. After years of construction and operation, these five pioneering cities has built up perfective impeccable subway system, which are excellent examples for other cities in China.
After 2005, China experienced a "Gold Season" of building subway. Most provincial cities carried out subway construction plans. It is reported that there will be 89 subway lines before 2016, in all 2500 km.
So far, there are 19 cities that have subways, they are: Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Guangzhou, Shenzhe, Nanjing, Tianjin, Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun, Chengdu, Chognqing, Wuhang, Kunming, Hangzhou, Suzhou, Hongkong and Taipei. Other 9 cities: Foshan, Harbin, Hefei, Zhengzhou, Wuxi, Nanchang, Ningbo, Nanning and Taiyuan, are building their metro lines.

Beijing has the largest subway system-15 subway lines, connecting urban area and suburban districts.
Shanghai has achieved a great success on subway construction. It has 11 lines, in totall 400km.
Hong Kong MTR is praised as one of the most efficient, most friendly and most lucrative in the world.
It used to be very difficult to take a taxi or spare a extra seat on public bus, but now it changes better due to the subway.
Chengdu carried out a metro plan of building in total 7 subway lines. Parently, there are already 2 lines under operation.

Chongqing is a mountainous city.Presently, Chongqing are three subway lines under operation, while whole subway project has not finished yet.
There are 5 subway lines under operation: Luobao Line, Shekou Line, Longgang Line, Longhua Line and Huanzhong Line.
Nanjing plans to build 17 subway lines over 617km,and 2 of them are already under operation.
Tianjin was the second city to build an underground railway in China. Its first subway was built in 1970s.
Presently, there are 9 rapid transit lines in Taipei, offering passengers comfortable and safe invironment.
April 28, 2012, Suzhou's first subway line was opened to traffic, which made Suzhou the first prefeture-level city having subway.
