Dongguan Travel Guide
Dongguan City, about 50 kilometers south of Guangzhou, 90 kilometers north of Shenzhen, 90 kilometers from Hong Kong and Macau, is a must-pass-by locality from Guangzhou to Hong Kong by road and waterway. Covering an area of 2,465 square kilometers, it administers 28 towns and 4 sub districts, home to about 7.5 million residents and 280,000 overseas Chinese and more than 70,000 compatriots in Hong Kong. All of them have made lots of contributions to the development of Dongguan, and it, presently, is a rising star in the South China with rapid economy and industry.
The advantageous geographic location has helped Dongguan become an important channel for the flow of information and goods in South China and one of the most dynamic economic centers in Guangdong Province. Except for its developed economy, the tourism of this city is also blooming recently, with a dozen historic attractions around Humen, such as Humen Bridge, Humen Sea Museum, Weihai Port and Humen Park.
Location & Geography of Dongguan
Adjacent to Guangzhou in the north and Shenzhen, Macao and Hong Kong in the south, Dongguan lies near the mouth of the Pearl River and in a favorable geographic condition. Dongguan, situated to the east of the Pearl River Delta, is a transportation hub connecting Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and the harbors along the Pearl River. It is only a 30-minute drive to Shenzhen Airport, 45 minutes to Huanggang Harbor and an hour's drive to New Baiyun Airport in Huadu District. In the north lies the Guangzhou-Huizhou Highway and in the southwest is the No. 107 National highway.
Climate of Dongguan
Because of the location at the south-center of Guangdong Province, lying on the east of the Pearl River Delta, Dongguan is influenced by the tropical and semi-tropical monsoon climate. The weather here is mild with plenty of rainfall all year around, and rainstorms and typhoons often occur from June to October. Tourists should check the local weather forecasts prior to travelling the city. Generally, the best season to have your Dongguan tour is the autumn.

Airways in Dongguan
Presently, there are no direct flights to Dongguan as the city does not have its own airport; however, it is very convenient for tourists flying to or from Dongguan through Guangzhou Airport, 50 kilometers to the north, Shenzhen Airport, 50 kilometers to South as well as Hong Kong Airport and Zhuhai Airport both of which are about 100 kilometers away. All of these airports have shuttle buses or ferries to Dongguan.
Railways in Dongguan
Dongguan Railway Station is located on Shangkeng Street of Changping Town which is to the east of Dongguan City. About 60 trains stop here each day. There are frequent trains to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Kowloon from here. Dongguan Eastern Station is located at the City Development Area of Maiyuan Village, Changping Town. Beijing, Shanghai, Xian, Hangzhou, Guilin and about 15 other large and mid-size cities of China can be reached from this station.
Highways in Dongguan
Dongguan has a highly developed highway system that is considered to be the best in China, and tourists can take buses from Dongguan to a number of provinces of China and also to other towns and villages of Dongguan City. The six bus stations built in the urban area of Dongguan City can definitely satisfy any travel needs. There are routes to the following provinces and cities: Fujian, Guangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan, Hainan, Huizhou and Jiangxi, and Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai and Foshan.
Ferries in Dongguan
Located at the estuary of the Pearl River, Dongguan is the important gateway in southern China. Humen Port, located at Humen Town of Dongguan City, is a first-class national port, for distribution to other parts of Guangdong Province, even to Guangxi Province. Now, in addition to the route between Humen Port and Hong Kong International Airport, visitors also can take ferries between Humen Port and China Hong Kong City.

Although Dongguan has a booming economy, seemingly a bustle and hustle city, it, actually is a hot tourist destination in China because of its splendid historical and cultural sites. The most attractive places of historical interests include the Humen Naval Battle Museum, Humen Bridge, and Opium War Museum.
