Dunhuang City, situated in the north of the Gansu Province, is land locked, and surrounded by high mountains.

Dunhuanng City has an arid continental climate with an annual average temperature at about 48.74ºF (9.3ºC) ranging from 76.46ºF (24.7ºC) in July to 15.26ºF (-9.3ºC) in January. March to October is suitable for visiting, but it is necessary to have enough water every day according to its dry air.
Transportation in Dunhuang
By Air
Dunhuang Airport is situated east of Dunhuang City. It operates about 38 flights weekly to many major cities in China, such as Beijing, Xian, Lanzhou, Urumqi, Jiayuguan, etc. The airport is closer to the Mogao Grottoes than to the downtown area, so you can go there directly from the airport if you are in a rush.
By Train
There are two railway stations in Dunhuang: the Dunhuang Railway Station and the Liuyuan Railway Station. The two stations connect Dunhuang with Jiayuguan, Xian, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Chengdu, Hankou, etc.
By Bus
Dunhuang Bus Station and Dunhuang Passenger Transport Center are two main bust stations for long-distance transportation in Dunhuang which operate buses to Xining, Hami, Turpan, Urumqi, Golmud, Lanzhou, Jiayuguan, Zhangye, Wuwei, etc.
Travel & Sightseeing in Dunhuang
Once a historic junction of China and the Silk Road, Dunhuang now becomes a top tourist destination attacting people from home and abroad. Obliviously, Dunhuang is known by tourists mostly for the Mogao Caves. The Mogao Caves (or named as the Mogao Grottoes), regarded as the greatest treasure-house of Buddhist Art in the world, are the most famous grottoes in China. Apart from the charming grottoes, the White Horse Pagoda, the Yumenguan Pass, the Yangguan Pass, the Crescent Lake, and Mt. Echoing-Sand are well worth seeing.
