Haikou - capital city of Hainan Province

As the capital of Hainan Island, Haikou is well known as the “Coconut City” attracting more and more tourists with its gorgeous natural resources. With the sea on three sides Haikou enjoys a long coastline that features excellent bathing beaches and sea side resorts, so the holiday beaches are the most impressive and popular tourist attractions. Among them, the Xixiu Beach is the most famous where the National sailing and windsurfing teams train and hold competitions. Haikou is the ideal place for the tourists who want to escape the bone-chilling winter climate elsewhere in much of China, providing clean sea water, fresh water, beautiful beaches and bright sunshine.

Besides the natural tourist resources, Haikou is home to numerous historical and cultural relics because of the long history of more than 2,000 years. As for the tempting local food, seafood is definitely is a must, and the tropical fruits are also the tourists' favor.

Location and Topography in Haikou

Haikou is located on the north Coast of Hainan Island, facing the Leizhou Peninsula, across the Hainan Strait and bordering the sea area of the South China Sea and facing Vietnam in the west across Beibu Bay. Nandu River runs through Haikou City separating it from the District of Haidian Island. It is the northernmost part of Haikou, and is accessed by one of three bridges, the largest being Haikou Century Bridge which connects Guomao district with Haidian island at the west mouth of the Nandu river.

Climate of Haikou

Haikou enjoys a tropical marine climate with an annual average temperature of 20 degree Celsius. Its spring is warm with almost drought conditions but the high summer temperatures bring heavy rain in their wake. Autumn is a season of typhoons and rain storms. It can feel quite cold in winter by contrast. As a rule, the best time to travel is between November and the following April. From May to October Haikou has its rainy seasons, with the precipitation reaching a peak during September.

Railways in Haikou

The railway between Haikou and Guangzhou was established on December 5, 2004, and it is the first Chinese railway connection that spans the sea. The entire journey takes about 12 hours and costs about 138 RMB.

Haikou Meilan Airport, 25 km away from the center of Haikou, provides a convenient connection between Haikou and other cities at home and abroad with more than 200 airlines to major cities both home and abroad such as Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Shijiazhuang, Wuhan, Dalian, Xiamen, Xian, Chengdu, Harbin, Nanjing and much more, as well as to Hong Kong, Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and so forth.

Haikou is the expressway center of Hainan Island with convenient highways connecting it with almost all the cities within the Island.

Haikou has been one of the top tourist destinations in China with its natural seascape, historical and cultural heritage relics as well as the newly-built modern theme tourist attractions. The top and never-to-be-missed scenic spots are the Dongzhai Harbor Mangrove Natural Reserve Area, Holiday Beach, and Wugong Temple. Other impressive scenic spots include the Dongjiao Coconut Plantation, Nanli Lake, Qiongtai Academy, Shimei Bay, Tomb of Hai Rui, Tropical Ocean World, and Wuzhi Mountain.
