As the capital and center of politics, history and culture of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou is located at the southern terminus of the Grand Canal and on the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, a superior position in the Yangtze Delta only 180 kilometers from Shanghai. Just because of the advantageous position, Hangzhou has been endowed with the gorgeous and unique natural scenic spots. It has been the most attractive tourist destination in China and won the reputation of the Water land. The places of interest of Hangzhou are famous for the green hills, crisp waters and the wonder of the spectacles as well as the natural landscapes.
Hangzhou City is established 2,000 years ago, with the distinguished cultures and history such as the liangzhu Culture and the Grand Canal. In the Chinese classical poems, the Western Lake was always mentioned and considered as the site of romantic and sad stories. The Italian traveler Marco Polo said that it is the most beautiful and luxurious city in the world and it remains a shining pearl in the southeast, although it has not been the capital of modern China. Besides, Hangzhou is also the home of elegant silk products, umbrellas and the official kiln.
Location and Topography of Hangzhou
Hangzhou is located in northern Zhejiang Province eastern China, at the southern end of the Grand Canal, on the plain of the mid-lower reaches of the Yangtze-River. The city center is built around the eastern and northern sides of the West Lake, just north of the Qiantang River.
The position of Hangzhou can make it able to grow the unique products such as the best type of Longjing Tea, the Xihu Longjing grown near Xihu Lake.
Climate of Hangzhou
Hangzhou enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with mild and moist weather and four distinctive seasons. The average temperature is about 28.6 degree Celsius in summer and 3.8 degree Celsiusin winter. Generally, spring starts in March; April and May are the best seasons for visiting with the average temperature between 9-15℃. June, July, and August are the rainy season with frequent showers. The end of June to the early part of July, marks the start of the Meiyu Season (or Plum Rain Season, of about a month long rainy season, beginning in early summer when the plum fruit ripens in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River).
