Kashgar
Kashgar (or called Kashi) is an oasis city in the west of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Kashgar has been noted from ancient times as a political and commercial centre. At present, it is also a famous tourist destination.
Location and topography of Kashgar
Kashgar lies in the west of the Taklamakan Desert and at the feet of the Tian Mountain (Tianshan in Chinese) range. It is also where both the northern and southern routes from China around the Taklamakan Desert converge.
Climate in Kashgar
Kashgar has a temperate continental climate with an annual average temperature of about 53ºF (11.7ºC). The best time to visit Kashgar is between August and September when the sky is clear and blue and flowers in blossom.
Transportation in Kashgar
By Air
Kashgar Airport, about 6 miles (10 km) away from Kashgar proper, is the second largest airport in Xinjiang. Airline to domestic cities like Urumqi, Hotan, Kuqa and Aksu are available. It also operates international flights to cities such as Kirghizia and Uzbekistan.
By Train
Kashgar Railway Station, about 3.1 miles (5 km) from the city center, offers trains shutteling between Kashgar and Urumqi.
By Bus
Kashgar International Bus Station runs to cities in and around Xinjiang, such as Aksu, Korla, Turpan, Urumqi, Shache, Yengisar, Shule, Dunhuang, and Golumd. There is also a special tourist line running between Tashkurghan and Kashgar. The special line will pass through seven important tourist attractions on the way, including Karakul Lake.
Travel & Sightseeing in Kashgar
Kashgar is one of the oldest but richest city at the west end of China. With an exotic culture and changeful landscape, Kashgar is now a popular tourist place for both domestic and international tourists. Kashgar Old Town is regarded as the best-preserved example of a traditional Islamic city in Central Asia. Apart from the old town district, other highlights are the Id Kah Mosque (the largest mosque in China), the Abakn Khoja Tomb (considered as the holiest Muslim site in Xinjiang and a well-preserved Islamic architecture complex throughout Central Asia), the famous Stone City, the charming Karakuri Lake, the Three Immortal Buddhists Caves (one of the earliest Buddhist caves in western China), the busy Kashgar Sunday Market, etc.
