Kunming

Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, is the political, economical, and cultural center of Yunnan and the provincial center for transport, science, and technology. Kunming, with a history of more than 2400 years, owes its significance to the fact that it was the gateway to the celebrated Silk Road that facilitated trade with Tibet, Sichuan, Myanmar, and India. Kunming enjoys a pleasant climate and does its best to live up to its title of "the City of Eternal Spring". Whenever you are planning to have your tour, the temperature is always pleasant.

Besides, it is the focal point of Yunnan minority culture. Some 25 ethnic minorities such as Yi, Bai, Miao, Dai, Hani and more inhabit the region. Each group has its own featured festivals to entertain its tourists. So, its modern development, historical relics, pleasant climate and colorful minority's cultures endow Kunming with the most advanced tourist destinations in China and World.

Location and Topography of Kunming

Kunming, located in the east-central Yunnan province, at an elevation of 1,890m on the Yungui Plateau with low latitude and high elevation, has a mountainous terrain, with fertile basin on the northern shore of the Lake Dian and surrounded by hills and mountains to the north, west and east. Owing to this kind of topography, Kunming has a unique pleasant climate. Besides, Kunming has some part of the karst terrain. About 96km southeast of the city is the Stone Forest, a karst formation developed as a tourist attraction consisting of rock caves, arches, and pavilions.

Climate of Kunming

Kunming enjoys the low-latitude monsoon climate, and does not have bitter cold in winter or extreme heat in summer. The annual temperature averages around 14.5?, and foliage remains green all year thus obtain its name of the 'Spring City'. January is the coldest season at about 8 C while July is the hottest month with an average temperature of 18  C. While there is no obvious peak or low seasons for tourism in Kunming; many visitors prefer the lively period from March to October

Railways in Kunming

Kunming has four railway stations. The main one is the Nanyao Station, about four kilometers (about 2.5 miles) from the center of the city, which would take about 10 Yuan within 15 minutes by Taxi to. Trains to the major cities within Yunnan and outside Yunnan run every day.

Highways in Kunming

Highway transportation has developed rapidly in Kunming. Highways radiate to places inside and outside Yunnan Province, as well as to neighboring countries. You can also choose long-distance buses to Kunming from Beijing (National Highway 108), Lanzhou (213), and Shanghai (320), Fuzhou (324) or other cities.

Airways in Kunming

Kunming Wujiaba International Airport lies in the southeastern outskirts of Kunming City, only about four kilometers (about 2.5 miles) away from the downtown area. From the Kunming International Airport you can fly to 74 domestic and international destinations.

Travel & Sightseeing in Kunming

Kunming, like Guilin, one of the top tourist destinations in China, is world known not only for its beautiful, peculiar, breathtaking and unique natural landscape, but also for its historical and cultural relics. The magnificent natural beauties and sightseeing include the Stone Forest, famed as the "First Wonder of the World", the Dianchi Lake with cyan water and peaceful environment and more. The cultural relic's attractions include the Golden Temple, Buddhist Qiongzhu Temple, 99 International Horticultural Exposition, and more. There are more to name.

Dianchi Lake
Situated about 2km southwest of Kunming, Dianchi Lake is a highland limestone fault lake, and one of the major scenic areas in China, covering an area of about 300km2 . The elevation of its water surface is over 1800 metres above se level and the average water depth is 5.5 metres. There are over 20 rivers emptying into the lake . The vast misty Dianchi Lake enjoys the fame of " A Pearl on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau " Around the lake , there exist a great number of famous mountains and scenic sites.

International Horti-Expo Garden
Situated in the northern suburbs of Kunming, it occupies an area of 218 hectares. The garden is the place where the 99'International Horticulture Exposition was held. The exposition fully reflects the Chinese characteristics, demonstrating the first class of the world's horticulture standard.
