As the capital of Gansu Province, located in the northwest of it, Lanzhou is not only the geographical center of China but also a center of the northwest in terms of transportation, telecommunication and the Silk Road Tourism Ring. Lanzhou stands a vital position on the Silk Road with Maiji Cave to the east, Bingling Thousand Buddha Caves to the west, Labrang Monastery to the south and Dunhuang Mogao Caves to the north.
Occupying a total area of more than 1631.6 square kilometers, Lanzhou holds a population of 3.14 million with many minorities’ ethnic groups such as Hui, Bao’an, Dongxiang, Tibetan, etc. owing to its advantageous location Lanzhou has a long history dating back to the 2500 years ago so as to have numerous tourist attractions. The Yellow River and the Ancient Silk Road provide with many top scenic spots for the tourists.
Location and Topography of Lanzhou
Lanzhou is situated on the upper course of the Yellow River, where the river emerges from the mountains. It has been a center since early times, being at the southern end of the route leading via the Hexi Corridor across Central Asia. It also commands the approaches to the ancient capital area of Chang'an (modern Xi'an) in Shaanxi province from both the west and the northwest, as well as from the area of Qinghai Lake via the upper waters of the Yellow River and its tributaries. Therefore, it possesses plenty of brilliant historical and cultural relics for the tourists to visit and explore.

Lanzhou West Bus Station and Lanzhou East Bus Station are the largest stations in Gansu Province. There are 750 buses to different places daily and the destinations and the famous tourist attractions are as far as Xinjiang, Baotou, Xining, Zhengzhou, Chengdu and Wenzhou, and the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, Hexi Corridor, etc.
