As one of the key heavy industry centers and capital of landlocked Shanxi Province in North China, Taiyuan is also the center of politic, economy, and culture of Shanxi. It accounts for more than half the national coal mining output. Encompassing 6,595 square kilometers, it has a population of 3 million. The government has drafted an ambitious plan to take advantage of its tourist attractions under the construction.
Taiyuan has enjoyed a history of over 2,500 years and there are plenty of cultural and historical architectures and relics, which make boast a wealth of tourist attractions, and among these Jinci Temple is the most notable one, as the symbol of Taiyuan. Besides, Shanxi noodle is famous all over the world, and the International Noodle Festival is held in Taiyuan,, which attracts a lot of gourmands.
Location and Topography of Taiyuan
Taiyuan, the capital city of Shanxi, is situated at the geographic center of the province along the north-south course of the Fen River. There are many mountains around here from east to west and in the north; there are rivers and plains in the middle part and northern part. Taiyuan's main topography is downloading; the plain only occupies five percent of the area.

Taiyuan has a warm temperate continental monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 9.3 C (48.7 F). It has sufficient sunshine but little rainfall. Spring here often comes with strong sunlight and heavy wind. The wind is troublesome, because it carries black dust. Summer is hot and rainy with high humidity. The average temperature is about 23 C (73 F). Winter, averaging a temperature of -7 C (44.5 F), is always cold and dry. Autumn is the best time to have your travel.

Taiyuan Wusu Airport is one of the most important airports in Shanxi Province. Direct flights are available from Taiyuan to some major cities including Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guilin, Nanjing, Shenyang and Xian. Taiyuan has opened to five international air lines since July, 2005 with flights connecting Taiyuan with Frankfurt, Paris, London, New York and San Francisco with all of these flights making a stopover in Beijing. Flights linking Taiyuan with Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Pulau Pinang now are available through Guangzhou New Baiyun Airport.
Railways in Taiyuan
Taiyuan is the starting point of Taiyuan-Jiaozhou line and the terminus of the Beijing-Taiyuan and Shijiazhuang-Taiyuan lines. Trains from here link large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Guangzhou, Xian, Chengdu and Baotou.Taiyuan Railway Station is located to the east of Yingze Avenue and you can get there via bus No. 1, 5 and 21. The ticket office is situated at the south of railway station.
