Tongli is a town in Wujiang County and on the outskirts of Suzhou City of Jiangsu Province. It is a time-honored water town with well-preserved historic and cultural legacy. Location and topography of Tongli
Tongli is located on the eastern shore of Tai Lake and to the east of ancient canal with eight lakes surrounded The town proper is divided by the streams into 7 islets interlaced with the surrounding water area, forming typical water county of the south.
Climate in Tongli
Tongli enjoys four distinct seasons due to its pleasant subtropical maritime monsoon climate with an annual average temperature of about 60.26ºF (15.7ºC). It seems to be suitable to go there in all seasons while the best time to visit is between April and July. However, a winter visit can give you a special experience when Tongli is covered by snow.
Transportation in Tongli
Tongli is 11.2 miles (18 km) away from Suzhou City and about 49.7 miles (80 km) away from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport. It also adjoins 318 national highway and Suzhou-Jiaxing Expressway. It's only a two-hour drive between Shanghai and Tongli. There are also buses shuttling between Suzhou and Tongli.

With 49 stone bridges, Tongli is definitely a town of bridges. The most famous bridges are the three bridges called Taiping (peace), Jili (luck) and Changqing (celebration) Bridge, which has been important landmarks of the place and regarded as the sacred architecture by the locals. The oldest bridge is Siben (Reflecting Origin) Bridge while the smallest one is called Dubu (Single Step) Bridge (which is only 1.5 meters long). Tongli is known as a "museum of ancient Chinese architecture" because about 40% of the buildings and temples in the town date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasty. The Tuisi (Retreat and Meditation) Garden is another hot spot in the town. Together with evergreen trees and colorful flowers the garden welcomes visitors with its beauty and charm whatever the season. However, Tongli is not only a tourist destination for exploring ancient Chinese culture and history but a place for one to relax and refresh.
