Travel & Sightseeing in Tsedang

It is said that no tour of Tibet is complete without a visit to Tsedang. There are a large number of historical interests in and around Tsedang, of which Samye Monastery, Yumbulakhang Palace, the Trandrak Monastery and the Tombs of Tibetan Kings are the most famous attractions. The Samye Monastery is the first formal Buddhist monastery that was constructed in Tibet. The main building at the Samye Monastery is a three-storied tower with decoration reflecting a perfect integration of Chinese, Tibetan and Indian styles. Located about 7.46 miles (12 km) south of Tsedang, the Yumbulakhang Palace is the first palace built by the Tibet and for their first recorded king Nyatri Tsedpo. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the Cultural Revolution and the present structure is an exact replica of the original. The Trandrak Monastery, built in 7th century, is the first Buddhist architecture in Tibet constructed during Tubo Kingdom. It houses a precious pearl Thangka brought here by Princess Wencheng. This Thangka is inlaid of thousands of pearls and hundreds of other gems. The intriguing Tombs of Tibetan Kings who ruled supreme from the 7th to the 9th century are located in Chonggye. The largest tomb belongs to Songsten Gampo. Visitors can take a ferry to visit some of the above crossing the Yarlung Tsangpu River.
