Wolong belongs to Wenchuan County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. Wolong Special District includes Wolong Town and Gengda Village. It has the same precinct as the famous Wolong National Nature Reserve. There are more than 4,000 different species recorded in the Wolong. By now, it is the most popular giant panda reserve in China and a charming tourist destination as well as an important base science popularization.

Location and topography of Wolong

Located in the southwest of Wenchuan County, Wolong is on the southeastern slope of Qionglai Mountain and is 80.78 miles (130 km) away from the provincial capital city of Chengdu. It covers an area of about 200,000 hectares with a population of over 5,300.

Climate in Wolong

Wolong has a subtropical monsoon climate characterized by an early spring, hot summer, cool autumn and warm winter. The annual average temperature is 39.2ºF (4ºC) to 41ºF (5ºC). The best time to visit Wolong is between March and June or between September and November.

Transportation in Wolong

Visitors can take daily buses at Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to reach Wolong. It takes about four hours from Chengdu to Wolong. Or travelers can take buses from Chengdu to Xiaojin at Chengdu Xinnanmen Station and get off in Wolong.

Travel & Sightseeing in Wolong

Most visitors rush to Wolong for the lovely pandas in the Wolong National Nature Reserve. The giant pandas are found only in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces, of which 80% are distributed within the territory of Sichuan province. However, Wolong is home not only to the giant pandas but also to rare and endangered animals such as red panda, golden monkey, white-lipped deer, gnu and precious plants like yew and beech. Apart from the spectacular animals and plants, Wolong is also blessed with wildly distributed mineral resources. What's more, visitors also can visit the Wolong Giant Panda Museum where exhibits the history, present and future of the giant panda. True to its reputation, Wolong is a really wonderful scenic splendor attracting the world attention.
