As the capital of Hubei Province, Wuhan is the largest city in the central China. It is situated on the Jianghan Plain, a river-crossed fertile land, which is created by the Hanjiang River joining China’s great Yangtze River in this area. Wuhan is the conglomeration of three boroughs, Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang, and it is known as the “thoroughfare of nine provinces”, as the major transportation hub in China. Covering an area of 8,406 square kilometers, it is the most populous city in the central China with more than 9,100,000 people living here.

With a long history of almost 5,000 years, Wuhan has been the top tourist destination in China due to its brilliant historical and cultural relics, playing an important role in China’s contemporary history. Besides, Wuhan has long been renowned as a center for the arts and for intellectual studies with a lot of famous poets producing amounts of celebrated poems. There are abundant buildings to symbolize the notable history and culture.

Location and Topography of Wuhan

Wuhan is located in the middle of Hubei province of China, the east of Jianghan Plain, and the confluence of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River and Hanshui River. The three towns-Wuchang, Hankou, and Hanyang face each other across the rivers and are linked by bridges, including one of the first modern bridges in China, known as the “First Bridge”, namely the Wuhan Changjiang Daqiao.

The geographical feature of Wuhan is flat only decorated with hills and a great number of lakes and pools, the Yangtze River and Han River winding through the city.

Climate of Wuhan

Wuhan enjoys a subtropical monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Summer in Wuhan is featured for its scorching heat and high humidity, while winter is as cold as the northern cities in China because of the river winds and humidity. It is renowned as one of the three Furnaces along with Nanjing and Chongqing. The average temperature in July is 37.2 degree Celsius, and the average temperature in January is about 7 degree Celsius. The best time to plan your tour should be from March to April.

Railways in Wuhan

Wuhan is the transportation hub in China with three main railway lines: Jiangguang Railway, Handan Railway and Wujiu Railway. Train lines are available for the tourists to travel more than 20 major cities in China from Wuhan including Beijing, Zhengzhou, Tianjin, Luoyang, Chongqing, Xian, Guangzhou and Nanchang, etc. Trains from Wuhan to other cities in Hubei province are available daily.

The national and provincial expressways and highways in Hubei province connect Wuhan with most provinces and cities in Central and Southern China. Taking the long-distance buses can bring tourists from Wuhan to Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Zhengzhou, Zhujiang and much more cities, and to the major cities within province.

Wuhan Tianhe International Airport is one of the busiest airports in China with more than 150 domestic and international lines connecting Wuhan with over 60 metropolises inside China and abroad.

Waterways in Wuhan

As one of the ports on the Yangtze River, Wuhan welcomes cruise tourists to this ancient city. The ferries are available to Chongqing, Shanghai and other riverside cities. Dozens of cruise services in Wuhan offer deluxe cruises to the famous Three Gorges. The Passenger Port is located on the western bank of the Yangtze River, at the right end of the famous Jianghan Road.

Wuhan has been one of the most attractive destinations in China with splendid historical and cultural relics, gorgeous natural beauties as well as the modern charm. The Yellow Crane Tower, the Wuhan’s landmark, is a must for tourists. The second importance is Guiyuan Buddhist Temple, one of the four significant temples in China, known for its perfect architecture, excellent sculptures and rich collection of Buddhist doctrine. The scenic East Lake area is top on all tour plans for its fascinating lake scenery, charming plum gardens and bamboo forest. Yangtze River Bridge is the first highway-railway over the Yangtze River, which has been the must-see site in Wuhan tour. The other famous places of interest include the Chairman Mao Zedong’s Villa, Heptachord Terrace, Hubei Provincial Museum Mo Hill and National Stone Museum.
