Being the capital city, Yinchuan is the political, economic and cultural center of Ningxia Autonomous Region with an area of 3.5 thousand square kilometers and a population of 840 thousand, among which the Hui people account for 26.3 percent of the total population and they have maintained the traditional folk customs and life style that are unique to other ethnic group. Yinchuan has been enjoying the reputation of "a land of fish and rice in the frontier" due to holding abundant water resources and mountainous scenic spots.
With a history of more than 1,300 years, Yinchuan is endowed with a brilliant and colorful history and culture, which has contributed to Yinchuan being a famous tourist city. There are over 60 historical sites including mosques, pagodas, pavilions, temples, and imperial tombs as well as natural scenery such as Helan Mountain, Sand Lake Scenic Resort (Sha Hu) and Shapotou, etc.
Location and Topography of Yinchuan
Ningxia lies to the west of the Yellow River and to the east of Helan Mountain. Located in the middle of the Yinchuan Plain, it is sheltered from the deserts of Mongolia by the high ranges of the Helanshan to its west. The Yellow River runs through Yinchuan from southwest to northeast.
The landform is divided into two main parts, the mountainous region in the west and south and the plains in the north and east. The average altitude of Yinchuan is 1,100 meters (about 3,609 feet).
Climate of Yinchuan
Yinchuan enjoys a temperate continental climate lacking of rainfall but with plenty of sunshine. The featured climate is windy, dry and sandy. The annual average temperature is about 9 degree Celsius and the temperature difference between day and night is quite large, nearly about 15 degrees Celsius. The best time to have your tour should be from May to October with the International Yellow River Art Festival of Yinchuan held in September.

There are now nearly 30 long-distance bus routes going to every city or county of Ningxia as well as some areas of Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi Province.

Yinchuan Hedong Airport is one of the domestic airports in China. It is presently connected to over 20 cities by either direct flights, or transferring in Xian and Beijing.
