Zhouzhuang's Location in China

Having a history of more than 900 years, Zhouzhuang is a town of Kunshan City, Jiangsu Province, China. Praised as the "Venice of the Oriente", Zhouzhuang is one of the most famous water townships in China and definitely a wonder place with profound cultural background, well-preserved ancient residential houses, elegant watery views and colorful local traditions and customs.

Location and topography of Zhouzhuang

Located in the southwestern part of Kunshan City, Zhouzhuang is about 18 miles (30 km) southeast of Suzhou (the provincial capital city of Jiangsu) and about 43.5 miles (70 km) west of Shanghai. Zhouzhuang is surrounded by Chenghu Lake, Baiyan Lake, Dianshan Lake, South Lake, and 30 more rivers.

Climate in Zhouzhuang

Zhouzhuang enjoys four distinct seasons due to its pleasant subtropical maritime monsoon climate. The annual average temperature is ranging from 60.8ºF (16ºC) to 62.6ºF (17ºC) while the lowest temperature is 23ºF (-5ºC) in the coldest January and the highest is 96.8ºF (36ºC) in July.

Transportation in Zhouzhuang

By Bus

Zhouzhuang can be easily reached by bus. There are two main bus routes: Suzhou-Zhouzhuang and Shanghai-Zhouzhuang. Daily buses from Suzhou North Long-Distance Bus Station head for Zhouzhuang every 20 minutes. Besides, Shanghai Long-distance Bus Station runs about 7 buses to Zhouzhuang daily.

By Water

The Jishui River connects Zhouzhuang with Shanghai and Hangzhou. Visitors also can take a ship getting in and around Zhouzhuang and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Travel & Sightseeing in Zhouzhuang

The picturesque town of Zhouzhuang is surrounded and divided by lakes and rivers, but it is the distinctive water lanes and stone bridges make Zhouzhuang special. There are 14 stone bridges over the myriad lakes, with unique views from each. The Twin Bridges (Shide Bridge and Yongan Bridge) are the most famous and are considered the symbol of Zhouzhuang. Shide Bridge is east-west and has a round arch, while Yongan Bridge is north-south and has a square arch. Fuan Bridge was built in the Yuan Dynasty with the feature of the consummate combination of the single-arch bridge and the bridge towers. Other main tourist attractions in Zhouzhuang are Shen House, Zhang House, Milou Tower (well-known for being a rallying place of the literators in ancient times), Chengxu Taoist Temple (also known as Sanctity Hall, one of the most famous temples in Wuzhong Region). Moreover, Zhouzhuang is one of the most well-preserved water town in China with many time-honored buildings. There are about 100 houses with courtyards, and 60 of them have arch gateways made with carved bricks. Strong local customs along with the attraction mentioned above all together make Zhouzhuang a popular destination for you to explore.
