An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale jolted southwest China's Yunnan Province early Monday morning, (Nov. 2, 2009), said the National Seismological Network of China.
The quake struck the Binchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture at 5:07 a.m. No immediate reports of casualties or damage are available.
The epicenter was detected at 26.0 degrees north latitude and 100.7 degrees east longitude, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, the network said.
Presently, more than 280,000 people were affected, 30,000 homes were damaged and more than 430 head of livestock killed, said a statement from the Yunnan Province Civil Affairs Department.
The firemen have been helped local residents build temporary tents at Mahua Village in Binchuan Couty of Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.
Binchuan is a county in the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture located in southern Yunnan Province, China, covering an area of 2,627 square kilometers with a total population of 330,000.
Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture governs one country-level city: Dali City; eight counties and three autonomous counties.
