As one of the four municipalities directly under the Central Government, Chongqing is the largest and populous in the four ones, occupying an area of over 82,400 square kilometers, and possessing a total population of 30.9 million. Since it’s more than 3,000 years history, it has been blessed with brilliant cultures relics’ attraction except for the natural Yangtze River Cruise scenic spots. Chongqing is widely renowned for its many karst caves (Wolong Karst), hot springs and gorges, and the picturesque landscapes are so charming as to make tourists always refuse to leave.

Location of Chongqing

Situated in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River at the confluence of the Yangtze River and Jialing Rivers in southwest China, Chongqing shares borders with Hubei, Hunan, Guizhou, Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces.

Chongqing has an uneven landform consisting of mountains and hills taking up most part of the area, with Mt. Dabashan, Mt. Wushan and Mt. Daloushan circling around it on the east, south and west, which makes its terrain sloping from south and north to the Yangtze River valley. Standing at the junction of the Yangtze River and Jialing River, the top highlight of Chongqing must be the Yangtze River Cruise, the China Three Gorges and more. Forest cover rate in this region is around 21%, with over 600 species of animals live here, among which over 100 are rare animals under national protection like China Panda.

Climate in Chongqing

Chongqing has a humid subtropical climate, with the two-season monsoonal variations typical of South Asia. Chongqing's summers are among the hottest in China, as high as 43°C, with an average high of 35°C in August. Winters are fairly mild, but damp and overcast; average January highs are 9°C. It's best to visit the city during spring, autumn and winter.

Railways in Chongqing

Three main stems including, Chengdu-Chongqing, Xiangfan-Chongqing, and Chongqing-Guiyang railways run through Chongqing, and are joined by branch lines of Baoji-Chengdu, Chengdu-Kunming, and Beijing-Guangzhou railways, connecting Chongqing conveniently with the rest of China.

Airways in Chongqing

Currently, Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) has 58 domestic and foreign city connections and 70 foreign and domestic airlines operate scheduled flights to Chongqing. Except for Hohhot in Inner Mongolia, all the capital cities of China's provinces have connections to Chongqing. With flights between Chongqing and foreign cities such as Seoul, Tokyo, Nagoya, Bangkok, Munich, and Dusseldorf, tourists can easily reach Chongqing by plane.

Highways in Chongqing

A convenient network made up by national highways and provincial highways has been completed including Chongqing-Chengdu, Chongqing-Wanzhou-Yichang, Chongqing-Guiyang, Chongqing-Dazhou-Xian, and Chongqing-Suining. Express highway like Chongqing-Nanchong, Chengdu-Chongqing, and Chongqing-Fuling has been put into use.

Waterways in Chongqing

Chongqing is the best starting point for a Yangtze River Cruise. Taking a cruise ship from Chongqing down the Yangtze River to Wuhan Yichang is now a popular tourist trip. Tourists can take the ship at Chongqing Chaotianmen Dock to reach Yichang, Hankou, Shanghai, Nanjing, etc.

Chongqing attracts and allures visitors from abroad and home with its beautiful natural scenery and rich cultural relics. The Three Gorges of Yangtze River and Jialing River are not just a natural wonder of spectacular sceneries, but areas surrounded by rich cultural heritages and fantastic legends, consisting of Dazu Rock Carvings, Porcelain Village(Ci Qi Kou), General Joseph Warren Stilwell Museum(chief commander of US forces during WW?), Three Gorges and the Yangtze River Cruise, the Northern Hot Springs Park and People's Assembly Hall.
The famous Chongqing hotpot boasts a long history. Street vendors as well as restaurants feature exciting spicy delicacies for the adventurers.
