Lanzhou, a well-known ancient city in China, is the capital of Gansu, which is the second largest city in the northwest China. It occupies a total area of 450,000 square kilometers, and has a population of 23, 7 million with a multinational population with a large concentration of Hui Chinese. Gansu was the place where the main traffic line in ancient time between China and Western countries-the famous Silk Road passed through. Located in the upper reaches of the Yellow River, northwest China, Gansu is one of the cradles of Chinese cultures, which forms many places of interest and historical monuments. Prominent cities include Lanzhou, Jiuquan, Jiayuguan, Jinchang, Wuwei and Gannan.

Location of Gansu

Neighboring provinces are Shaanxi to the east, Sichuan to the south, Qinghai and Xinjiang to the west and Inner Mongolia and Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region to the north.

It lies between the Tibetan Plateau, Inner Mongolia, and the Loess Plateau, and borders Mongolia to the north-west, with the majority of its land more than 1,000 meters above sea level. The landscape of Gansu is mountainous in the south and flat in the north, the highest elevation-Qilian Shan Mountain at 5,547 meters high. Between Qilian Shan and Beida Shan is the well-known Hexi Corridor where green land and Gobi Desert intermittently spread. It was the route of ancient “Silk Road”. The Yellow River runs through Gansu province.

Climate of Gansu

The area is ruled by typical temperate continental climate, bringing with frequent storms and sharp change in temperature in summer, while in winter, it is always dry and cold. The annual average temperature is about 0 C to 15 C, with lowest temperature -14 C to 3 C in January and highest 22 C and 25 C in July. The best sightseeing time should be from May to October.

Centered round Lanzhou, national railways as well as provincial highways connect every city and county in the province. Express highways connecting Lanzhou with Baiyin, Hami, and Baji have been put into use.

Travel & Sightseeing in Gansu

Because of its centuries-old history and glorious cultures, Gansu is plentifully endowed with civilization relics and natural scenic spots. Vast and gorgeous natural scenery like the Gobi Desert and pure glacial sightseeing present an impressive and breath-taking picture before your eyes. The world-famous Mogao Caves id the biggest and most well-preserved Buddhist art palace and also a post along the ancient Silk Road. An important outpost in ancient China is the grand Jiayuguan Pass, the western end of the Great Wall. The Labrang Monastery in Xiahe is one of the largest Tibetan Buddhist resorts in China while the Bingling Thousand Buddha Caves in Lanzhou are a treasure trove of Han Buddhism.
