With Wuhan as its capital, Hubei province is located on the north bank of Dongting Lake, along Yangtze River. It covers an area of over 180,000 square kilometers, and has a large population of 60.01 million people. Hubei has a long history, and has been said to be one of the originating places of the Chinese people. Today many minority ethnic groups live here: Miao, Tujia, Dong and some others. Hubei is home to the ancient state of Chu that developed its own unique culture. Chu culture mixed with other influences, ancient and modern, which endows Hubei richly with tourist attractions. Remarkable cities include Yichang, Wucheng, Jingzhou, etc.
Location of Hubei
Situated in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, Hubei is surrounded by Henan Province to the north, Jiangxi and Hunan to the south, Anhui to the east, Sichuan to the west and Shaanxi to the northwest.
The Jianghan Plain takes up most of central and eastern Hubei, while the west and the peripheries are more mountainous, with ranges such as the Wudang Mountains, the Jingshan Mountains, the Daba Mountains, and the Wushan Mountains. The terrain gradually slopes from the west to the east. Yangtze River and its largest branch Hanshui are the two major rivers in Hubei. Yangtze River Cruise is the top tourist attraction in China.
Climate of Hubei
Hubei is ruled by a subtropical monsoonal climate with a humid and hot summer, dry winter and strong sunlight in autumn. Annual rainfall averages 800-1600 millimeters and with average temperatures ranging from 15 C-17 C. Most places in Hubei enjoy four distinct seasons, with the best times to travel there being spring and autumn.

Railways in Hubei
Centered round Wuhan and Xiangfan, there are five major stems railways including Beijing-Guangzhou, Beijing-Kowloon, Jiaozuo-Liuzhou, Hankou-Danjiang and Xiangfan-Chongqing which run through Hubei province, and are joined by provincial trunk lines like Wuhan-Jiujiang.
Highways in Hubei
Centered round Wuhan, Xiangfan and Yichang, there are many national highways running across Hubei which can reach every city and county in the province. Two express highways of Yichang-Huangshi, Huangshi-Huangmei have all been put into use.
Airways in Hubei
Tianhe Airport in Hubei is one of the most important air harbors with domestic flight courses connecting Hubei with Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hong Kong and 50 other major cities in China, while international flight courses connect Hubei with Japan.
Waterways in Hubei
Wuhan is one of China’s most important river ports, and half of Hubei’s cities and counties lie along two major waterways: Yangtze River and Hanshui River. Other major ports include Jingzhou, Huangshi and Yichang.
Travel & Sightseeing in Hubei
The centuries-old history, brilliant Chu culture and spectacular natural sceneries make Hubei a top tourist destination in China. One of the major scenic spots is the Mount Wudang, a scared Taoist mountain with hundreds of temples and palaces. East Lake, the biggest lake within city in China, is the major tourist attractions in Wuhan. The most attractive site is the Yangtze River with the Three Gorges, offering unmatched painting of water and mountains, and the world famous Yangtze Three Gorges Dam Project is also located here. The Shennongjia Reservation is definitely an attraction.
