Hunan Province

With Changsha as its capital, Hunan province is situated on the south bank in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. Occupying an area of over 210,000 square kilometers, it has a total population of 65.99 million. Hunan is long well-known for its natural beauty, surrounded by mountains and waters, which makes it among the most beautiful provinces and the top tourist destination in China. Besides, Hunan has a long history so as to have a brilliant cultures. It has been a major center of Chinese agriculture, growing rice, oranges and tea for thousands of years.

Location of Hunan

Located in the south central part of the Chinese Mainland, Hunan borders Hubei in the north, Jiangxi to the east, Guangdong to the south, Guangxi to the southwest, Guizhou to the west, and Chongqing to the northwest.

Hunan is surrounded by mountains on the east, west, and south, and by the Yangtze River on the north, so its terrain gradually descends from the south to the north. Xiangjiang, Zishui, Yuanjiang, and Lishui are major rivers in Hunan, among which Xiangjiang is the largest. Dongting Lake is the second largest fresh water lake in China. Mountains and waters form Hunan as a natural scenery spot.

Climate of Hunan

Hunan has subtropical humid monsoon climate which brings about plenty of rainfall and distinctive seasonal difference. The annual rainfall is between 1,200~1,700mm. The average annual temperature is between 15~18.5?, with an average temperature in January between 3~8?, while in July between 27~30?

Railways in Hunan

Beijing-Guangzhou, Zhuzhou-Guiding, Hengyang-Aikou, Jiaozuo-Liuzhou, and Hangzhou-Zhuzhou raiways are the main stems which run through Hunan, and are joined by many other branch lines.

Highways in Hunan

National or provincial highways can reach wvwry city and county in Hunan. The express highways, Changsha-Xiangtan-Chenzhou, Changsha-Yiyang-Changde, Changsha-Xiangtan-Shaoyang-Huaihua have been built.

Airways in Hunan

Changsha has flight courses to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and 40 other main cities in China. Non-stop flight courses have been open to Thailand and R.O. Korea.

Waterways in Hunan

Freights can go from the four major rivers through Yangtze River to the East China Sea.

Travel & Sightseeing in Hunan

Spectacular natural sceneries are attracting more and more tourists from abroad and home. Wulingyuan Scenic Area, located in Zhangjiajie city, is the top one, consisting of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, which presents a unique landscape of incredible Karst physiognomy, splendid waters, deep gorges, and lush forests, and is included in the World Heritage List by UNESCO. Mt. Hengshan is one of the five sacred mountains in China, and has been praised as "the first for its beauty in among the five famous mountains".

In addition, the popular tourist sightseeing includes, Mt. Shaoshan, Yueyang Tower, Dongting Lake. The cultural relics contain Yuelu Academy, Wuxi Steles and Emperor Yan's Tomb.
