Great Walls by Different Dynasties

The map below shows the location of the Great Walls built in different dynasties. The Great Wall of China is a series of stone and earthen fortifications in Northern China, built, rebuilt, and maintained by several dynasties at different times in Chinese history, between the 5th century BC and the 16th century to protect the northern borders of the Chinese Empire. The different sections of the Great Wall built in different dynasties are different in length and location. The Great Wall that we see today was mainly built during the Ming Dynasty (as shown on this map), on a much larger scale and with longer lasting materials than any wall that had been built before.

The sections in Beijing, such as Badaling and Mutianyu, are the most well-preserved and popular destinations of Great Wall Hiking.
