Henan Province is considered to be the cradle of Chinese civilization due to its location on the Yellow River, and the rich historic heritage has endowed it with numerous places of historic interests: Luoyang's Longmen Grottoes, famous for its grand treasure trove of Chinese Buddhist Statues, located 12 kilometers south of Luoyang, Iron Pagoda (Tie Ta) of the Northern Song Dynasty, Dragon Pavilion (Long Ting), site of imperial palace of the Song and Jin Dynasties, and the Xiangguo Temple, one of the most famous Buddhist temples in China. Besides, Songshan Mountain, the natural highlight of the province, lies southwest of Zhengzhou, one of the most famous mountains in China because of the rugged beauty of its peaks and the Bonsai-like appearance of its beautiful old trees. Shaolin Temple, the most famous Buddhist temple in China and the largest of the Songshan range, locates on Shaoshi Mountain.
