Hong Kong Octopus Card Info

The Octopus Card can be used for any public transport (except mini-buses and taxis), at cosmetic shops, fast food stores, clothes shops, supermarkets, cinemas and hospitals. Wherever you see this sign "∞", you can use the Octopus Card there.

There are more than 476 different service providers and retailers who accept the Octopus Card for payment, mostly used on the various means of transport, including the Mass Transit Railway (MTR), City Bus Limited and Star Ferry, etc.

There are two large kinds of the Octopus Cards – On–loan Card and Sold Octopus Card. You pay a refundable deposit an on–loan card, whereas you can buy a card to keep if you prefer.

When first purchasing the Octopus Card, 50 Hong Kong dollars is included as refundable deposit, and the remaining value will be stored in the card for normal payments.

Price of Octopus Card (HK Dollars)

Adult: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $100 = Price HK$150

Child: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $20 = Price HK$70

Senior: Deposit $50 + Stored Value $20 = Price HK$70

You can top-up your card at any public transportation company's Customer Service Centers, MTR or KCR stations' Octopus Add-Value machines or convenience stores such as 7-11 or Circle K. Besides, you can just return it to any public transportation company's Customer Service Centers, and then you can obtain the remaining balance and deposit. The card can be valid for three years after the last top-up date, so you can retain the card as souvenir or for your next visit to Hong Kong.
