Maps of the Terracotta Warriors and Horses
The Terracotta Army are the Terracotta Warriors and Horses of Qin Shi Huang' mausoleum, the First Emperor of China. The Terracotta Warriors and Horses, dating from 210 BCE, are the most significant archeological excavations of the 20th century. They were discovered in 1974 in eastern suburbs of Xian, Shaanxi province, by some local farmers digging a well. The Terracotta Army has been a never-to-be-missed attraction of any tour to China. It has put Xian on the map for tourists.
Life size terracotta figures of warriors and horses are arranged in battle formations, each of which varies in height, uniform, hairstyle in accordance with rank. The museum covers an area of 16,300 square meters, divided into three sections: No. 1 Pit (the largest, first opened to the public in 1979), No. 2 Pit (found in 1976 and unveiled to the public in 1994), and No. 3 Pit (found in 1976 and on display in 1989) respectively, containing over 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots with 520 horses and 150 cavalry horses, the majority of which are still buried in the pits. In 1987, the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor was listed by UNESCO as one of the world cultural heritages of China.
