Kashgar means a "gathering place of boulders" in Uygur language, and there is a saying that you have not been to Xinjiang unless you have been to Kashgar. The city is one of the oldest but richest oasis at the west end of China, and has been regarded as the economic, political and communication center south of Tianshan Mountains for thousands of years. The city is also well known as a tourist destination with beautiful natural sceneries and numerous tumuli and ancient builidings of Islam and Buddhism in and around the city. The most attractive landmarks in the city include Abakh Khoja Tomb, Id Kah Mosque, Karakul Lake, Kashgar Bazaar, Stone City and Three Immortals Buddhist Caves.
